EnergyWatts Monthly update on India’s energy storage market

Date of release: July 2026
Report by JMK Research and IEEFA
India’s energy storage pipeline has crossed 100 gigawatts (GW), while commissioned capacity has reached 10.3GW, with monthly additions beginning to accelerate. As of June 2026, around 50GW capacity has been awarded in the energy storage space.
Tender capacity
- 4.2GW ESS capacity was tendered in June 2026, with Standalone BESS accounting for the largest share at 2.9 GW, followed by FDRE projects at 1.2 GW and RE + Storage with 0.1 GW.
- The 2-hour configuration still dominates, while the 4-hour configuration is accelerating after the Ministry of Power amended its VGF guidelines for standalone BESS to allow either a 2-hour or 4-hour configuration.
ESS Commissioning Updates
545MWh of BESS capacity was commissioned across 3 projects in June 2026.
ESS Pricing Trends
LFP cell prices rose marginally on month-on-month basis to around US$55/kWh (INR5,223/kWh) in China. The landed costs of LFP cells and BESS containers in India remain 10–25% above China prices, reinforcing the case for local manufacturing.
Manufacturing Updates
India’s manufacturing footprint remains concentrated at the downstream end of the value chain, with roughly 60GWh of battery-pack assembly capacity already in place. No account of cell manufacturing as of date.
Regulatory Updates
- MNRE proposed one-time package to unlock around 44.8GW of stranded RE capacity headlined the month.
- UPERC approved a firm tariff for a 5MW concentrated solar power (CSP) project, an early sign of regulators backing emerging storage technologies.
