Wind Solar Hybrid C&I Project Case Study

Wind Solar Hybrid (WSH) systems have recently started gaining prominence as an innovative solution for Commercial and Industrial (C&I) consumers in India. As solar and wind power have complementary daily and seasonal energy generation profiles, their combined power output is much more stable and reliable compared to standalone wind and solar. Hence, through this case study of an already operational wind solar hybrid plant, we are analyzing in detail the complexities associated with this emerging solar and wind power technology.
The plant is owned and operated by CleanMax and is located in Davanagere district of Karnataka, at a distance of around 250 km from Bangalore. It is one of the first solar and wind power hybrid projects in India dedicatedly catering to consumers in the C&I segment. The current operational capacity of this plant is 151 MW (81 MW wind + 70 MW solar), with a projected capacity of 300 MW upon the next phase’s completion in 2023. JMK Research visited this Wind-Solar Hybrid plant in October 2022. CleanMax chose the Jagalur site for developing WSH due to its high energy generation potential, suitable power evacuation infrastructure, and easy logistical accessibility.
The report looks in detail at the several parameters crucial for understanding wind solar hybrid systems in general. These include specifications, equipment used, costing, project performance etc. In order to understand the end consumer benefit, consumption details of two major consumers (NTT and Cargill) are further studied in detail.
