Capacity Installation trends

  • About 7.3 GW of utility-scale solar capacity was added in 2019 in India and another 2.1 GW of rooftop solar capacity.
  • Karnataka (1.9 GW), Tamil Nadu (1.8 GW) and Rajasthan (1.3 GW) contributed about 70% of total installed capacity in 2019.
  • In 2020, about 8.3 GW of new utility-scale solar projects and 2 GW of rooftop solar projects are expected to be commissioned. We have revised our earlier estimates of 11 GW of utility-scale solar and 2.5 GW of rooftop solar considering the current ongoing delays and lockdown situation due to the Corona virus impact.

State rankings

  • Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka DISCOMs have the best rating basis their operational and financial performance in FY2017-18 released by the Ministry of Power (MoP).
  • Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh have the highest annual energy requirements of more than 1,00,000 Million Units/ year.
  • From Project Developer’s perspective, Gujarat and Karnataka are the most conducive states to set up solar projects in India.
  • As of December 31, 2019, Rajasthan has a pipeline of more than 5 GW solar projects under planning while Gujarat and Maharashtra have a pipeline of about 2 GW projects.
  • In terms of best solar resources availability, Rajasthan and Gujarat have the maximum generation potential.

Annual Market share

  • Modules: Risen, Waaree, and Znshine were top three module suppliers in India in 2019.
  • Inverters: Huawei, ABB, and TMEIC were the leading inverter suppliers in India in 2019 for utility-scale solar projects while Growatt, Sungrow, and Solis were the top three suppliers for rooftop/ onsite solar market in India.
  • Project Developers: NLC, ReNew and Azure were the top three developers which have commissioned maximum utility-scale solar projects in India.
  • Rooftop/ Onsite solar installers: Cleantech, Fourth Partner and Tata Power Solar were the leading installers in India in 2019.

Tender activity

  • About 37 GW of new solar tenders were issued in India in 2019. This include 23 GW of project development tenders, 9.2 GW of EPC tenders, 2.2 GW of power procurement tenders and another 1.6 GW of rooftop solar tenders.
  • Auctions were completed for about 18 GW of tenders out of which only 13 GW of capacity is allotted.
