Whitepaper: India’s Emerging Electric Freight Transition through E-Truck Adoption

India’s freight sector is beginning to move towards electrification, supported by lower operating costs in suitable applications, growing fleet demand, policy support, and expanding electric truck portfolios. However, adoption remains uneven across vehicle categories, with light goods vehicles leading the transition, while medium and heavy goods vehicles remain at an early stage.
This whitepaper examines India’s electric truck market across light, medium, and heavy goods vehicle segments. It explores sales trends, EV penetration, economic viability, key players and models, and the policy, infrastructure, and operational conditions shaping electric freight adoption.
Key Highlights
- India registered 15,052 e-trucks in FY2026. During April–August FY2027, registrations reached 13,773 units, equivalent to 92% of FY2026’s annual volume. Electric heavy goods vehicle registrations during this period exceeded their FY2026 annual total by 55%.
- E-truck penetration increased from 1.47% in FY2026 to 3.14% during April–August FY2027, indicating growing adoption from a relatively small base.
- Light goods vehicles accounted for approximately 94% of e-truck registrations in FY2026 and 90% during April–August FY2027. Electric medium goods vehicles began to emerge, but represented just 0.04% of registrations during the latter period.
- The economic viability of electric heavy goods vehicles remains closely linked to daily utilisation, charging efficiency, and energy costs, with predictable, intensive operations offering greater potential for total cost of ownership savings over diesel.
- The PM E-DRIVE Scheme allocates INR 500 crore to support 5,643 e-trucks, complemented by PARIVARTAN incentives and CAQM directions supporting goods-vehicle electrification in Delhi-NCR.
- High upfront costs, financing constraints, charging requirements, payload–battery trade-offs, and limited operating history remain key barriers, particularly in the heavy-duty segment.
