India Adds Record 21.9 GW of Solar and Wind Capacity in H1 2025

India sustained its clean energy growth trajectory by adding approximately 21.9 GW of new solar and wind capacity in the first half of 2025 (January–June), marking a substantial year-on-year increase of over 56%. Solar installations rose by 51.6%, while wind capacity surged by 82% compared to last year.

In terms of cumulative installations, according to the data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) till June 2025, India’s RE installed capacity reached ~234 GW. Solar energy contributes approximately 50% of the total RE segment, making it the major contributor, followed by wind at 22%, large hydro at 21%, bio power at 5%, and small hydro at 2%.

Note: Solar capacity includes utility scale solar, rooftop solar and off-grid/distributed solar capacity

From January to June 2025, about 14.3 GW of new utility-scale solar capacity was added in India. This represents about 49% higher installations from H1 2024. Majority of this capacity ~10.6 GW is added in Q2 2025 only.

In H1 2025, India added roughly 3.2 GW of rooftop solar capacity—a 76% increase over H1 2024, while in the off grid/ distributed solar segment, about 816.6 MW was added which is about 18.6% higher than H1 2024 installations.

In the wind sector, about 3.5 GW of new capacity was added in H1 2025, 84% higher than the 1.9 GW capacity added during H1 2024. The trend is expected to continue as new RE procurement mechanisms such as wind-solar hybrid, wind/solar with ESS, and Firm & Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) tenders gain traction.

In terms of state wise installations in H1 2025, three states—Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra—together contributed over 50% of India’s total solar and wind capacity additions, highlighting their central role in the country’s clean energy transition.
